Kidney Stones: Medical Management

Kidney stone care is not only about treating an acute painful episode. For people with recurrent stones, medical evaluation can help identify urine, diet, metabolic or medication-related factors that increase the chance of another stone.

How We Can Help

Care built around the clinical picture.

Medical evaluation of kidney stones

Review of stone recurrence risk

Metabolic blood and urine assessment when indicated

Hydration and diet planning

Preventive medication when appropriate

What to Expect

A clear evaluation, then a practical plan.

Previous scan reports and, if available, stone analysis are useful. Depending on stone history, blood tests, urine tests and metabolic evaluation may be advised. Surgical or obstructive problems are coordinated with urology when needed.

When to Consider a Consultation

Reasons patients are often referred.

  • Recurrent kidney stones
  • Stone disease with reduced kidney function
  • Family history or early-onset stones
  • Multiple or bilateral stones
  • Need for prevention after an acute episode
Common Questions

Frequently asked questions.

Should everyone with stones stop eating calcium?

No. Blanket calcium restriction can be inappropriate. Prevention depends on the stone type and individual risk factors.

How much water should I drink?

Many stone-formers benefit from higher fluid intake, but people with heart or advanced kidney disease need individualized fluid advice.

When is a stone an emergency?

Stone symptoms with fever, inability to pass urine, uncontrolled pain or severe illness need prompt medical assessment.
