What to Expect

A clear evaluation, then a practical plan.

Access planning considers kidney function trajectory, blood vessel quality, expected dialysis needs and other medical conditions. Vascular mapping or specialist procedural assessment may be coordinated when required.

When to Consider a Consultation

Reasons patients are often referred.

  • Approaching hemodialysis
  • Need for permcath or fistula planning
  • Reduced or absent fistula thrill
  • Access swelling, redness, pain or prolonged bleeding
  • Catheter fever, chills, discharge or dressing concerns
Common Questions

Frequently asked questions.

Why is a fistula often preferred?

When suitable, fistulas generally last longer and have fewer infection and clotting problems than dialysis catheters.

Can a permcath be used immediately?

A tunneled dialysis catheter can generally be used soon after placement, which is why it may be used when dialysis must start quickly.

What if I cannot feel the fistula thrill?

A sudden loss or major change in the usual vibration should be reported promptly to the dialysis team.
